Patient teaching
Five As
Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange
The structure of a brief counseling conversation, most often taught in the context of tobacco cessation.
What each letter stands for
- 1 Ask about use.
- 2 Advise on stopping.
- 3 Assess willingness to try.
- 4 Assist with a plan.
- 5 Arrange follow-up.
How it gets tested
The final A is the tested letter — a conversation that ends without arranging follow-up is the incomplete option.
