Medication safety
Three Checks
Check when taking it out, when preparing it, and before giving it
The label is verified three separate times against the order. It runs alongside the Five Rights rather than replacing them: the rights are what you check, the three checks are when.
What each letter stands for
- 1 When removing the medication from storage.
- 2 When preparing or drawing it up.
- 3 At the bedside, before administration.
How it gets tested
Items pair this with the Five Rights and ask which is which. Rights = what. Checks = when.
