Safety and emergency

PASS

Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep

How a portable fire extinguisher is operated. It expands the final letter of RACE, and the two are usually taught and tested in the same breath.

What each letter stands for

  1. 1 Pull the pin.
  2. 2 Aim at the base of the fire, not at the flames.
  3. 3 Squeeze the handle.
  4. 4 Sweep from side to side.

How it gets tested

The tested detail is almost always the A: aiming at the base rather than the visible flame. Items are built so that "aim at the flames" is the attractive wrong answer.
