CAGE

Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye-opener

A four-question screen for problem drinking, named for the key word in each question.

What each letter stands for

  1. 1 Cut down — has the person felt they should cut down?
  2. 2 Annoyed — have others annoyed them by criticising their drinking?
  3. 3 Guilty — have they felt guilty about it?
  4. 4 Eye-opener — have they needed a drink first thing in the morning?

How it gets tested

Tested as what the letters stand for and as which screening tool fits an alcohol-use scenario; CIWA (withdrawal) is the usual distractor.
