atrial fibrillation

An irregular, often rapid heart rhythm from disorganised electrical activity in the atria. On an ECG the rhythm is irregularly irregular with no clear P waves.

How it gets tested

Appears in rhythm-recognition items and in items about why it matters — the stroke risk that follows from clots forming in the atria.
