activities of daily living
The basic self-care tasks — bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence, feeding. IADLs are the instrumental ones, such as managing money or medications.
How it gets tested
The ADL/IADL distinction is a standard item: cooking and paying bills are instrumental, bathing is basic.
